The Guard's Tent at Drottningholm is a fascinating example of 18th-century architecture that surprises with its illusory form. From the outside, it resembles an elegant fabric tent, but in reality, it is a solid, two-story structure. This ingenious design, inspired by King Gustav III's travels, testifies to his creativity and love for surprises. The tent served a practical function as accommodation for guards, but its unique form gives it a distinctive character. Attention to detail, such as the sheet metal facade imitating fabric and the textile-like fringes, makes the building a true architectural gem. The history of the Guard's Tent, connected with the previous guardhouse and its later use as quarters for an infantry school, adds depth and shows how the functions of this place have changed over the years. The restoration of the building in the 1990s preserved its original appearance, allowing us to admire it in all its splendor. The Guard's Tent is a must-see on the Drottningholm map for history and architecture enthusiasts. It is a place that combines functionality with aesthetic beauty, creating an unforgettable impression.
A historic structure that is as close as it can be to the original one. Made from metal, and with the colorful exterior it stands out very nicely in the surrounding and it is definitely one of the more interesting buildings.
Very interesting construction. It appears to be made of fabrics but it is actually painted wood. Was built because one of the kings wanted to have it for the guards, hence the name. Inside there’s a little museum. And if you’re lucky to be during its opening hours - you can have a picnic there.
